GOOD JAYNE! BAD JAYNE!
A Whimsical, Bipolar Trip to Bedlam
Jayne Paynter Moomaw
The author opens herself up and shares her
problems with the debilitating state of mental health known as “bipolar affective disorder” and “manic depression.” She introduces the reader to her life, her
family, her doctors, and various mental hospitals and patients around the
country. Although it sounds depressive, she uses humor, drama, and expressive
poems to entice the reader to enter her bipolar world. However, she feels
putting mentally ill people together in the same setting is imperceptible.
People struggling to get in touch with reality and their true, sane feelings are
bombarded with insane thoughts and babblings. After so long, it becomes easiest
to give in to insanity and to stop struggling for reality. Jayne however moves
in and out of depression, mood swings, and suicide attempts—leaving the reader
with the feeling that here is a very normal person after all but one with
constant struggles to remain in a state of normalcy.
