MACEDONIA TO AMERICA AND BACK
Thomay Nestor
The essence of family and culture runs throughout the book. Because of
the murder of his father by the Bulgars, sixteen-year-old Dimitri, the
eldest son, must flee for his life. His mother though holds the family
together.... In America, this immigrant boy moves from dishwasher to
restauranteur to movie entrepreneur, climbing upward steadily,
resourcefully, amassing wealth in the new world. He moves among the nobility
of the screen world, from Charlie Chaplin to Al Jolson, even being involved
in the production of The Jazz Singer. But, he returns to his beloved
Macedonia, always remembering his mother’s words: Accept whatever Fate
brings you; there’s nothing we can do about it.
