RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION: “HOW DO I GET STARTED WITH MY AUTOBIOGRAPHY?”1. Write as if you are talking. That is the simplest way of getting the words down on paper. 2. Then, when you have that first draft done, rewrite, rewrite, and rewrite until you get it readable. 3. Do not expect to get your manuscript published by a mainstream publisher. Most of them will not take manuscripts by unknown authors unless they feel the book would sell well. You will have to self-publish by learning how to do it yourself or work with someone like me who assists authors in self-publishing. 4. Join a writers group in your community. They are a great source for getting started writing and they “love to give advice to new writers!” Look for writers groups in your local newspaper or ask your local bookstore owner or librarian if they know of any writing groups. Some bookstores sponsor such groups and encourage writers to attend meetings at their store. 5. For help with getting started writing, buy or check out from the library all the books you can find on the subject. One writing book I recommend is Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg or If You Want to Write by Brenda Ueland. Another source book is The Leisure Pen by Joyce Steward and Mary Croft. 6. For publishing, check on The Self-Publishing Manual by Dan Poynter, The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing by Marilyn and Tom Ross, or A Simple Guide to Self-Publishing by Mark Ortman. You can probably find them all at bookstores or on the Internet. Some libraries may even have them. 7. Check the books on my web site and see the kinds of autobiographies that I publish. Most of mine are not complete autobiographies but a period of time in an author’s life that is of historical significance. 8. Contact me if you want to talk. I’d be glad to help you get started.
