THESE WERE MY DAYS
Growing up in Portland
Edward W. Coles
Growing up in Portland, Oregon, at the turn of the century, you can
imagine what childhood was like when telephones and electric lights were
newfangled luxuries? A real-life Tom Sawyer, you can also imagine how many
scrapes a rascal son of Welsh immigrants could get himself into and out of
in one childhood. Ed felt three groups of people might be interested in his
stories: 1) those 65 or younger who were not yet born when his story ends
and who have no knowledge of the events, 2) the real old-timers who like to
reminisce, 3) those who are interested in products no longer generally
remembered, and 4) those who would enjoy the vast changes in sports.
